Cine en la Biblioteca: Spanish Film Series - "Soldados de Salamina"
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - 6:00pm
"Soldados de Salamina" a drama by David Trueba (2003). A novelist (Gil) who has abandoned her writing career tracks down the details of a true story from the last days of the Spanish Civil War. The writer and Falangist Rafael Sánchez Mazas (Fontserè) faced a firing squad along with fifty other prisoners, but managed to escape into the woods. A Republican soldier, apparently one of those searching the area for the escaped prisoner, found him but allowed him to escape. The novelist pieces together the fragments of the story, plagued by contradictions and mysterious characters, and comes to realize that her search for the truth is a personal quest of self-discovery.
The Ortigas Foundation, with the collaboration of the Embassy of Spain and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, begins its monthly film series CINE EN LA BIBLIOTECA with two runs on the Spanish Civil War and its first series on literature and cinema with the film adaptations of La Colmena by Camilo José Cela and El Abuelo by Benito Pérez-Galdós. The films will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles.
