Common Paper Treatment and Intensive Book Repair Workshop

The Ortigas Foundation Library (OFL) will hold a two-day Common Paper Treatment and Intensive Book Repair Workshop with the OFL conservation staff on November 8-9, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  The Workshop fee is P4,500 inclusive of materials, lunch and snacks. Participants will learn the fundamentals of conservation of paper and books. It includes basic knowledge of materials and supplies; appropriate tools and equipment; and common treatment processes for documents and bound objects.

Topics include common treatment of paper like surface cleaning; removal of self-adhesive tapes; mending tears; chemical washing; and full laminations and intensive repair of books like strip lining torn edges; attaching loose pages; guarding and sewing signatures; and consolidation of textblock and casing. This hands-on workshop will encourage active participation in order to foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual exchange of ideas and experiences. There are no prerequisites for this workshop, though prior related experience is an advantage. Members of the OFL conservation unit have been treating damaged rare books, antique maps, prints and related cultural artifacts for years as a team. Some of them have attended conferences, workshops or seminars with study-visits to Japan, US, Australia and Europe.
