An Intensive Course on the Conservation of Books and Paper
February 17, 18 and 19, 2011
Facilitator: Loreto Apilado


A three-day book and paper treatment repair class that will focus on:
  • Common treatment, stabilization, binding structure rehabilitation, image integration and partial restoration of single sheets and bound printed materials.
  • Acquiring basic knowledge on the elements of book rehabilitation and some practical skills on repairing and treating old and new books.
  • Identifying materials needed and how to prepare and explore other alternative supplies and their other uses. It will also cover basic procedures in repairing and cleaning textblock, cover, signatures and bindings.
  • Participants will be working some portions of their project in the library’s conservation laboratory

This course is highly applicable and recommended for collection librarians, private collectors, library staff and students.

The course will be held on February 17, 18 and 19, 2011, 9am to 5pm at the Ortigas Foundation Library. Course fee is P4,500. Fee includes snacks, lunch, materials and certificate.

Note: Participants are required to bring 2 to 4 books that they would like to work on and have questions about. Please also note that this is not a full book and paper conservation course.

About the Course Facilitator

Engr. Loreto D. Apilado is a licensed Electronics Engineer, but is more into hand papermaking, book and paper arts and conservation.

He is looking forward to becoming a book and paper conservation engineer.

He attended bookbinding, paper decorating and conservation book repair workshops in the US. He learned Oriental hand papermaking in Japan under several master paper craftsmen. He visited papermaking facilities and book conservation workshops in the US, Japan, China and Australia.

He works at the Cottage Industry Technology Center and is presently the conservation consultant of the Ortigas Foundation Library, he also renders technical assistance to museums, archives, libraries and business enterprises all over the country. Mr. Apilado was awarded Excellent Prize for his artist book at the18th Imadate Exhibition of Contemporary Paper Art Works in Japan. He is a member of the International Association of Hand Papermaker and Paper Artists (IAPMA).
