OUR VISUAL HISTORY
Discovering the 19th and Early 20th Century Philippines through Photographs
A talk by John L. Silva
March 17, Thursday
6 p.m. at the Ortigas Foundation Library
What was life in the tropics like under Spanish colonization 130 years ago? What historical junctures were captured by the camera’s eye?
In this lecture John L. Silva puts together a chronological history of a people under Spanish dominion, transitioning into revolution and later,
struggling against American intrusion. At each step, cameras were present faithfully recording the nuances of each historical juncture from
costumes to architecture and to important historical figures. 19th century photographers like Albert Honiss, Francisco Van Kamp, and Manuel Arias
and their work will be examined, ranging from bucolic images to the execution of Jose Rizal.
Important photographic images from the Ortigas Foundation Library Collection will be shown for the first time. History does “come alive” through visual history.
