About the Book :
A History of the Philippines is intended for those curious about the Southeast Asian archipelago but may know little about its political, social, and cultural influences. The narrative examines pre-Westernized society, the advent of Spanish-style Roman Catholicism, the 1899 Philippine-American War and World War II – conflicts that began and ended U.S. occupation – and the different events that have shaped the development of the nation since its independence in 1946, including two ongoing insurgencies, one Islamic and and the other Communist.

About the Speaker :
Philippine-born LUIS H. FRANCIA moved to New York City in the 1970’s. He is the author of numerous books including Eye of the Fish: A Personal Archipelago, Museum of Absences, and, with Angel Velasco Shaw, co-editor of Vestiges of War: The Philippine-American War and the Aftermath of an Imperial Dream, 1899 – 1999. He teaches creative writing at the City University of Hongkong, as well as literature through Hunter’s College’s Asian American Studies program and Tagalog language and culture at New York University’s Asian/Pacific/American Studies program.





 




NBDB Book Club Reads Shadow of Doubt at the Ortigas Foundation Library


On April 16 at 2pm, the NBDB Book Club will be hosting a discussion of Marites Vitug’s Shadow of Doubt: Probing the Supreme Court, the much-talked about book about the inner workings of the Supreme Court. Released just recently, the book aims to shed light on the country’s judiciary process and probes the alleged manipulations by some members of the magistrates in the decision-making of the Supreme Court.

Joining the discussion as panelists/reactors are: Atty. Victor Avecilla, professor of Law and Mass Media at the UP College of Mass Communication; Anvil Publishing’s Karina Bolasco; and journalist/editor Pete Lacaba.

ALT+PUB : A Mini Forum on Alternative Publishing

Ortigas Foundation, Inc. and Pinoypoets invite everyone to Alt+Pub: A Mini-Forum on Alternative Publishing, happening on February 20 (Saturday) at 2:00 PM, at the Ortigas Foundation Library.

The forum, which may also serve as a crash course on alternative modes of publishing, will have as it discussants Adam David, a poet who has published his works 'alternatively,' Gilbert Monsanto, owner of independent publishing outfit Sacred Mountain, and Joey Blanco, general manager of Ultraprint.
