The ugly side of mining operations in Luzon. Full caption continues: "Wooded part in background which is smouldering is known as the "kaingin," and the Philippine government has taken measures to suppress this burning of timber in order to clear land for cultivation. Around the mine can be seen the poor homes of the workers with their thatched straw roofs.
