ABOUT THE BOOK

In the large rectangular pictorial Expedición a Jolo 1876, Baltasar Giraudier, reveals his artistic métier in drawing the inhabitants and views of the Sulu Archipelago, the Spanish principals, and fleet during a most crucial historical period. In the past, Giraudier, as a lithographer, worked in tandem with the artist C.W. Andrews whose illustrations of Philippine scenes appeared in Ilustración Filipina (1859 – 1860). In Expedición a Jolo, Giraudier became the principal artist for all the 38 plates, panoramas, and maps, lithographed by J.M. Mateu in Madrid. These drawings are considered to be among the best lithographic illustrations of the Philippine Islands. ~ from Foreword
