Manila River Trade

 

The Pasig River and its tributaries and canals were a vital part of the commerce of Manila. Large cascos or hooded longboats of Chinese origin would bring textiles, wares, spices, and many more; enter the mouth of the Pasig River and go inland to deliver their goods. Flat bamboo rafts, pushed by men with poles on both sides navigated the small and numerous canals that were present in the old day city. They too were laden with product from the outlying provinces to bring to Manila. The trade went both ways from countries, provinces to Manila and vice-versa, and by the turn of the century, thousands of cascos, sailing boats, rafts, and outriggers dotted Manila Bay and the length and breadth of the Pasig River.
