19th Century

These note cards are a selection of engravings that were first published in the Illustrated London News in the mid-nineteenth century. They create both an insightful and at times humorous picture of life in the Philippines at the time.

In December of 1856, the Illustrated London News sent a young correspondent named Charles Wirgman out to Hong Kong to report on life in the Far East, including Canton, Shanghai, Macao, and Manila. His reports to the magazine were illustrated with fascinating watercolor drawings, which were, in turn, reproduced as black and white engravings for publication in London. Wirgman captured European expatriate life in the East and native customs, commercial life, and industry.
