Thanks to rapidly developing print technology mid-nineteenth century saw an upsurge in the number of illustrated newspapers and magazines around the world. Artists were employed to draw and paint beautiful and exotic sights and reproduce them as engravings and color lithographs. The lovely Filipino costumes used for these note cards first appeared in "Ilustración Filipina" here in Manila, in the "London Illustrated News" and in other publications abroad. They capture the elegant and graceful attire of cosmopolitan Filipino city dwellers and the rustic wear of the simple provincial inhabitants.
